An Italian Greyhound is a dog that is a "greyhound in miniature", though unlike his larger cousin, he is much smaller and more slender in all proportions.
The usual size of an Italian Greyhound is from 13 to 15 inches, though some are as small as 11 inches or as tall as 18 inches. They can weigh as little as 5 pounds or as much as fourteen or fifteen , but the average weight is about ten pounds. Their coat is short, smooth and soft to the touch, odorless and sheds very little. Because of their low body fat ratio, Italian Greyhounds need to be kept warm in cooler weather.
The Italian Greyhound is registered with the American Kennel Club as a member of the Toy Dog Group. The breed is believed to have originated more than 2,000 years ago in the Mediterranean area now known as Greece and Turkey. They became a favorite of the Italians during the sixteenth century and , due to this popularity, became known as the Italian Greyhound. One of the most decorative dogs, the Italian Greyhound became a favorite of royal families and is featured in many famous paintings.
Though they are ornamental looking, Italian Greyhounds are very active,
very inquisitive little animals who enjoy giving and receiving love immensely.
Being quite people-oriented, they require the stimulation of quality human
companionship. Italian Greyhounds are best kept in a quiet, calm home environment
and do not make good pets for households with very young rambunctious children
or very rambunctious large dogs.
